Self-serve Ads Manager for ChatGPT

A few months back, [OpenAI introduced ads inside ChatGPT](link) as a limited test for a small group of advertisers and users.

At the time, the company was carefully experimenting with how advertising could work inside AI conversations without affecting the overall user experience.

After months of testing, feedback, and gradual rollout, OpenAI has now taken the next step in expanding its advertising efforts by launching a self-serve Ads Manager for ChatGPT.

The new platform allows businesses to create, manage, and track ad campaigns directly inside ChatGPT, much like traditional advertising platforms from Google and Meta.

The move signals that OpenAI is not just building an AI product anymore. It is slowly building a large-scale advertising ecosystem around conversational AI, where brands can reach users during high-intent interactions and discovery moments.

What OpenAI Actually Announced

OpenAI on Tuesday, through an official blog post, shared that it is expanding its ChatGPT ads pilot by making advertising more accessible to businesses through a new beta self-serve Ads Manager.

Until now, most ChatGPT ad placements were managed through selected partners and limited collaborations. With this update, advertisers can now directly create and manage campaigns while also getting access to better campaign tracking and bidding controls.

As part of the launch, OpenAI is also introducing cost-per-click (CPC) bidding along with expanded measurement tools to help businesses understand campaign performance more effectively. The company stated that these tools are designed to give advertisers more flexibility without sharing conversations or personal user details.

OpenAI also emphasized that ads will remain clearly separate from ChatGPT’s answers, as the company continues to focus on user trust and privacy while expanding its advertising ecosystem.

“We have been collaborating with leading agency partners including Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP to support businesses purchasing ChatGPT ads. We’ve also added technology partners such as Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt, and will continue to invest in and expand our partner ecosystem.”

The update shows that OpenAI is now moving beyond experimental advertising and laying the foundation for a larger AI-native advertising platform built around how people use conversational AI tools like ChatGPT.

Why This Launch Matters

At present, businesses mainly rely on platforms like Meta Platforms, Google, TikTok, and a few other major ecosystems to run digital advertising campaigns.

But ChatGPT already has the kind of user base that makes it relevant for almost every type of business, from SaaS companies and ecommerce brands to education platforms, healthcare businesses, agencies, and local service providers.

That is exactly why this launch matters far beyond just another advertising feature update. OpenAI is gradually positioning ChatGPT as a large-scale discovery and decision-making platform where users actively ask questions, compare products, research services, and seek recommendations.

Self-serve ads

The scale itself is significant. Reports suggest ChatGPT has already crossed hundreds of millions of weekly active users globally, with OpenAI reportedly reaching around 900 million weekly active users earlier this year.

In India alone, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared that ChatGPT now has around 100 million weekly active users, making India the company’s second-largest market after the United States.

With this kind of adoption, the launch of a self-serve ads platform could influence how businesses approach digital marketing over the next few years. Instead of only targeting search keywords or social media interests, brands may eventually start optimizing for conversational discovery and AI-driven recommendations.

At the same time, user reaction will play a major role in how aggressively OpenAI expands advertising inside ChatGPT.

Unlike traditional social platforms, ChatGPT interactions are more personal and task-focused. A negative advertising experience could quickly affect user trust, which is one of the biggest reasons people continue using AI assistants in the first place.
