Ever since the launch of ChatGPT, the AI industry has been moving at an incredible pace. Almost every week, a new model, feature, or platform enters the market as companies race to attract more users and become the preferred AI assistant for businesses and consumers.
As this competition continues, another trend is becoming increasingly important: AI platforms are now sending meaningful traffic to websites. For marketers, publishers, and businesses, the question is no longer which AI tool has the most users. It is also about which platforms are driving visitors, leads, and brand visibility.
According to recent data, Claude has emerged as the fastest-growing AI traffic source. This growth is particularly noteworthy because Claude operates very differently from many of its competitors.
While several AI platforms offer generous free access to attract users, Claude's most powerful features are often behind paid plans that can cost significantly more than competing options.
Despite that, Claude's referral traffic has grown rapidly over the past few months. The trend suggests that users are finding enough value in the platform to keep using it, and in many cases, relying on it for research, content creation, coding, and business workflows.
For website owners and SEO professionals, this raises an important question: why is Claude growing so quickly, and what does it mean for the future of AI-driven traffic?
What the latest data actually says
The biggest evidence behind Claude's rise comes from a recent study by SE Ranking, which analyzed referral traffic data from 101,574 websites across 250 countries. According to the study, Claude's referral traffic share grew by an impressive 386% between January and April 2026, making it the fastest-growing AI traffic source during that period.
However, it is important to look at the full picture. Despite this rapid growth, Claude still accounts for a relatively small share of total AI-driven website traffic. In the same dataset, ChatGPT remained the clear leader with 78.23% of all AI referrals. Perplexity followed with 9.33%, Gemini held 6.85%, Copilot accounted for 3.57%, while Claude contributed 1.40%.
What makes Claude particularly interesting is that it appears to be generating higher-quality engagement compared to its traffic volume. SE Ranking found that visitors arriving through Claude spent an average of 1,114.1 seconds on websites globally. That is significantly higher than what many marketers typically see from other traffic channels and suggests that Claude users are often arriving with a stronger intent to research, learn, or take action.
This aligns with another important finding from Similarweb. Their data shows that AI-generated referrals are becoming increasingly valuable for businesses, with ChatGPT referral traffic achieving a 7.1% conversion rate, second only to paid search in their dataset. The takeaway is simple: raw traffic numbers do not tell the whole story. As AI platforms continue to influence how people discover websites, the quality and intent of visitors may become more important than traffic volume alone.
For now, ChatGPT remains the dominant AI traffic source. But Claude's growth rate and strong engagement metrics suggest it is becoming a platform that marketers, publishers, and SEO professionals can no longer afford to ignore.
Why Claude Is Growing Faster Than People Expected
One of the biggest reasons behind Claude's rapid growth is the type of users it attracts. Unlike many AI platforms that have built large audiences around casual conversations, quick questions, and everyday tasks, Claude has developed a strong reputation among developers, marketers, founders, analysts, and other professionals who use AI as part of their daily work.
Many Claude users rely on the platform for coding, business analysis, research, content creation, workflow automation, and problem-solving.
There are countless examples available on LinkedIn that show how people use Claude to test, build, and ship real products. Here’s one such example:

These are tasks that often require deeper thinking, more context, and external validation. As a result, users are naturally more likely to visit source websites, explore references, compare information, and spend more time engaging with the content they discover.
This behavior is reflected in the engagement data. While Claude's overall referral traffic share remains relatively small, the users it sends tend to be highly engaged and often arrive with a specific purpose in mind.
User discussions across Reddit further support this trend. In one popular discussion, a user described Claude as, "my SEO strategist, content engine, and CTO," claiming they grew from zero to 10,000 active users in six weeks without spending anything on ads.

While individual experiences should not be treated as universal proof, they highlight how many professionals now view Claude as a serious productivity and business tool rather than just another chatbot.
The release of newer Claude models has also helped accelerate adoption among professional users. As Claude continues improving its coding, reasoning, research, and workflow capabilities, more businesses and knowledge workers are integrating it into their daily processes.
This creates a different type of user behavior compared to casual AI usage. People are not simply looking for a quick answer. They are using Claude to make decisions, build products, conduct research, and execute projects.
When AI becomes part of a user's workflow rather than a tool for occasional questions, website referrals become more valuable. Users are more likely to click through to original sources, verify information, and consume content in depth.
That may explain why Claude's traffic growth is being accompanied by unusually strong engagement metrics, even though its overall referral share is still far behind larger competitors such as ChatGPT.
AI Traffic Is Becoming Too Big to Ignore
Claude's rapid growth shows that AI platforms are becoming an important source of website traffic, not just tools for generating answers. While ChatGPT still leads the market, the rise of Claude highlights how quickly user behavior is changing.
