When AI image tools became widely available, they made it easy to create images from simple text prompts. But creating an image was only part of the challenge.

Editing those images was often much harder. You could ask an AI tool to change one small detail, but the result could change the entire image, including parts you wanted to keep.

OpenAI is now taking a step forward with ChatGPT Images 2.5. The new image model focuses more on making targeted edits while keeping the rest of the image intact. It also brings better reference-image fidelity, more consistent results across multiple edits, and faster image generation.

Precision editing is the biggest change

The biggest change in ChatGPT Images 2.5 is how it handles edits. Instead of rebuilding the entire image when you ask for one small change, the model is designed to modify the specific element you mention while keeping the rest of the image intact.

OpenAI says this can help with changes such as replacing a piece of clothing, updating a product or background, or making targeted edits to more complex images. Users can also point out specific elements using comments or annotations.

We wanted to test how well this works in practice, so we created an aquarium image with exactly three fish: a goldfish, a betta fish, and a guppy.

Here is the first image we generated:

We then moved to the editing section by clicking on the generated image. Images 2.5 gives users several editing options, including Markup, Comment, Remove BG, Erase, and Resize.

For our test, we used the Comment option and asked it to change the goldfish into a turtle while leaving the rest of the aquarium unchanged.

Here is how it worked out:

The other elements of the image remained unchanged, which is a big improvement over how AI image editing often worked earlier.

Previously, making a similar change could mean generating the image from scratch again, resulting in a completely different composition. With Images 2.5, the aquarium, other two fish, plants, lighting and overall composition stayed in place while the requested element was changed.

Multi-turn edits are more consistent

The improvement is not limited to making one precise edit. Images 2.5 is also designed to keep your previous changes intact as you continue editing the same image.

This means you can keep building on an image through multiple prompts instead of having to start over every time you want to make another change.

For example, you can first change a subject, then adjust the background, add or remove an element, and make further visual changes while keeping the edits you have already made. This makes the process more useful for creating and refining complex images, where the final result may take several rounds of changes to get right.

Better preservation of people, pets and reference images

Earlier, AI image tools could start drifting away from the reference image after a few edits. A person's face could change, a pet could look different, or important details of a product could get lost as you continue modifying the image. That made it harder to use your own images as a reliable starting point for creative work.

With Images 2.5, OpenAI is putting more focus on preserving those reference details across edits. This is especially useful when working with selfies, pet photos or product images, where keeping the original subject recognizable matters.

You can use a reference image and continue changing its setting, style or other elements without losing the details that make the original image recognizable. This could make ChatGPT more useful for creating marketing visuals, social media content and other designs based on real people, pets or products.

Faster generation + better visual intelligence

OpenAI says Images 2.5 can generate images with up to 50% lower latency than Images 2.0. It also improves areas such as natural lighting, textures, complex layouts, transparent backgrounds and understanding real-world information in images.

The speed improvement also matters when you are editing or experimenting with ideas. Faster generation means you can make changes, see the result and try another version without waiting as long.

Combined with the model's improved visual understanding, this makes ChatGPT Images 2.5 more useful not just for creating a final image, but also for quickly brainstorming ideas and refining them through multiple iterations.

AI Image Creation Is Moving Toward Better Control

For creative professionals, AI image generation has quickly become a useful part of the workflow. Tools like ChatGPT are helping designers, marketers and content creators brainstorm ideas faster, create variations and scale visual content without starting every concept from scratch.

The bigger change with updates like Images 2.5 is the level of control users have over those ideas. Being able to make a small change, preserve the rest of the image and continue refining it through multiple edits makes AI image creation more practical for real-world work.

At Tenet, we may not use every new image-generation feature in our own workflows, but we keep an eye on these changes because they show where creative tools and the wider industry are heading. Improvements in editing, consistency and speed could make AI a much more useful part of how teams create and refine visual content.
