OpenAI Rolls Out Group Chat Feature for ChatGPT Users

ChatGPT’s new group chat feature is designed to help multiple people and the AI work together in the same conversation. It works like a shared discussion room where everyone can talk, drop ideas, upload files, and ask ChatGPT for help at any point. 

The setup is simple: one person creates a group chat and shares an invite link, and others can join instantly. Up to a limited number of people can participate, which makes it ideal for focused planning, study groups, and team tasks. 

The interface stays clean so that messages from people and ChatGPT appear in a single continuous thread.

OpenAI has started piloting this feature in selected regions, and users across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans can access it as long as they are logged in. 

The feature works on both web and mobile, which means everyone in the group can participate from different devices. Since this rollout is still in the pilot phase, OpenAI will gradually expand access based on user feedback and stability of the feature.

The group chat supports a wide range of ChatGPT actions inside the shared conversation. Users can prompt ChatGPT to summarise long threads, compare options, generate ideas, rewrite content, analyse files, or create images. 

The model can also respond in a more conversational style because it is expected to participate in a shared environment rather than a private one. Some important capabilities include:

OpenAI has kept personal history and group history separate. ChatGPT does not pull personal memories or private chat information into a group. Messages inside the group stay contained within that space and do not create personal memories for any user. 

Each person can manage their own view and export their own conversation data if needed. Group chats also stay protected from outside access, and participants can leave the chat anytime.

Suppose a group of friends planning a trip to Dubai. Instead of discussing everything across multiple chats, they start a single group conversation with ChatGPT included.
